Generator Wagon

Background:

I converted a Bachmann Tram to remote control battery power, and as my railway does not have overhead power, the cover story is that it has a diesel engine to power it, which is just about feasible.  However whilst reviewing some posts on a forum somebody posted "A prototype for everything" which had this photo linked:

A search of the internet did not reveal any scale generators, so a scratch build would be the way forward for the generator, based very roughly on this real life generator.

The wagon to carry the generator would be based around the IP Engineering freelance flat wagon.

A basic box was produced, with the control panel at the end, and a more traditional exhaust fitted to the top.  Panel were scored on the sides.

The internet was then searched to find a suitable cover for the radiator, a large and two small lovers were purchased through "Model Boat Bits" to fit at the engine end, vents at the generator end were made from 1/4 round plastistrut.

I also found a pair of pallets, these looked just right to fit under the generators skids.  The "Fat controller" to provide a sense of scale of the generator.

The IP engineering wagon was build as per the instructions, and after the trial run, the wagon was found to be a little light.  My favourite method was employed to add weight, divers ballast shot is added, and then potted with 2 part polyurethane resin.

A work of caution, if there are any gaps the resin will seep through so ensure the area is fully sealed.

The generator was painted and decals added, then chained down using IP Engineering "Safety Chains", and dummy cabling added.

The control panel is printed on sticky backed paper and stuck in place and clear acetate sheet fitted in front. The handles are Garden Railway Specialist coach "T" handles painted silver.

From a distance the true scale of the generator can be appreciated.
